Over half a million displaced in Amhara face dire conditions as shelters crumble

The humanitarian crisis in the Amhara region of Ethiopia has left over 560,000 displaced individuals in urgent need of shelter and essential non-food items. Conditions in 33 internally displaced persons (IDP) sites are severe due to overcrowding, structural damage, and insufficient maintenance of shelters that were meant for short-term use but have been occupied for years.

The report by the Global Shelter Cluster indicates worsening living conditions, particularly with rising risks of gender-based violence due to overcrowding. Additionally, a significant number of displaced people reported food shortages, and the deteriorating security situation has severely impacted their livelihoods. While there has been some integration of IDPs into local communities, many continue to reside in overcrowded centres, where basic services are lacking.

Last year, thousands of individuals residing at the Jara IDP center in the North Wollo Zone of the Amhara region expressed their distress through a peaceful demonstration highlighted the fact that it has been over two months since they last received their ration
